Understanding heart symptoms and cardiovascular concerns

Heart symptoms such as chest discomfort, palpitations or shortness of breath can feel concerning. While many symptoms are not caused by serious heart disease, some do require careful assessment to determine whether the heart is involved.

Dr Sophia Wong evaluates a wide range of cardiovascular symptoms and conditions with a focus on clarity, proportionate investigation and evidence-based decision-making. Careful clinical assessment helps determine whether symptoms relate to heart structure, heart rhythm, blood pressure variation or non-cardiac causes.

A measured approach to heart conditions

Not all heart conditions require intervention. In many cases, reassurance and monitoring are appropriate outcomes.

Testing is guided by symptoms, cardiovascular risk profile and clinical context rather than routine screening. The goal is to support informed decisions while avoiding unnecessary medicalisation. If you are unsure whether your symptoms may be cardiac, your GP can assist with referral for specialist assessment.
